3 facts filed under Host interfaces and protocols: all 3 are reported by a second source. Each was checked against the source’s own words, so its figures appear there, and each names where it comes from. The idea is taught in Part 5, The Controller.

In SR-IOV, a physical function (PF) includes the SR-IOV Extended Capability used to configure and manage SR-IOV, while virtual functions (VFs) are lightweight PCIe functions that carry the resources needed for data movement.
SR-IOV was created with the architectural headroom to support hundreds (if not thousands) of virtual functions (VFs).
SR-IOV lets one physical PCIe function, such as one Ethernet port, appear in configuration space as multiple functions each with its own configuration space.
